Marshmallows Are Their Favorite — book cover

One investigator. Four months undercover. Getting in was the easy part.

Trusted with the keys and armed with covert cameras, she steps into a world the public was never meant to see. Thousands of monkeys in metal cages. Secrets hidden in plain sight.

She tries to make sense of what's being done to the monkeys while everyone around her acts like it's just another Tuesday.

No one suspects her. One mistake could change that.

Day by day, the pressure of her double life builds. Close calls mount. And the deeper she goes, the more difficult it becomes to separate the people she's deceiving from the system she came to expose.

This is a fast-paced true story about a multi-billion-dollar industry built on secrecy, the adrenaline of going undercover, and the cost of living a lie long enough to tell the truth.

From the Author

The Story Behind the Book

"I wrote this book because I owe it to the monkeys."

Most people have no idea what happens inside primate labs. I didn't either, until I was on the inside, getting to know the primates, the workers, and the hidden world built around them. You don't just clock out and forget a place like that. What I saw stayed with me, and so did the responsibility to tell these stories.

Because this is a heavy topic, I intentionally balanced the dark reality with moments of humor, playfulness, and connection. I want readers to feel the adrenaline of the investigation, but mostly, I want them to meet the monkeys the way I did.

What People Are Saying

"A thriller, an exposé, even a love story. But even more than that, it is an intensely personal and revealing journey of one woman willing to risk her own safety as she navigates two identities in an attempt to shine a light on the truth."

Ari Solomon & Mikko Alanne

Award-winning producers of The Animal People

"Unforgiving, empathetic, raw and real. An eye-opener. A broken system that is fundamentally cruel, crude, and irrelevant in these technological times."

Ingrid Newkirk

Founder and Principal, PETA, and author of numerous books, including Animalkind

"Lindsay Oliver's courageous work clearly and shockingly reveals that too often scientists neglect this basic responsibility to nature's sentient and vulnerable beings. This honest story must be told."

John Gluck, Ph.D.

Professor Emeritus, former animal researcher, and author of Voracious Science and Vulnerable Animals
